ABUELITA CARMELA - Sixty-five-year-old "Grandmother Carmela" is the capable and warmhearted, recently-widowed proprietor of "El Regalo" ("The Gift") Mexican Restaurant in the present day.

MANUEL - Forty-year-old son of Abuelita Carmela. Co-Proprietor of the family-run restaurant "El Regalo."

UNCLE HENRY (TIO ENRIQUE) - Longtime family friend.

TINA - Abuelita Carmela's teenaged granddaughter / daughter of Manuel
* * *
RICKY - Abuelita Carmela's young grandson / son of Manuel

MIGUEL - Leader of the mariachi band at "El Regalo" restaurant

* DECEMBER 1531 *
JUAN DIEGO - Aztec matmaker-widower who has converted to Catholicism. Mid-thirties, good physical shape. Devoted to his Christian faith and to his aging uncle Juan Bernardino.

JUAN BERNARDINO - Ailing, elderly uncle of Juan Diego. Juan Bernardino, who has raised his nephew since the death of Juan Diego's parents at the age of five, enjoys a tender and close relationship with his nephew Juan Diego.

MARY, THE LADY OF GUADALUPE - Mother of Jesus. Beautiful seventeen-year-old adolescent with mainly Aztec features. Gently commanding.

FRAY JUAN DE ZUMARRAGA - Powerful fifty-year-old Spanish Bishop of Mexico. Zumarraga is politically savvy, learned, and at times displays his ability to be short-tempered.

JOSÉ - Leader of two Spanish aides in charge of the waiting room at Bishop Zumarraga's residence in Mexico City.

FEDERICO - Assists José in running the bishop's waiting area. Like José, Federico is often boastful and argumentative when dealing with his co-worker and with Juan Diego.

FRANCISCAN FRIARS - Two outspoken Spanish religious who live in poverty among the Nawatl-speaking Indians in outlying communities of Mexico, under Bishop Zumarraga's jusrisdiction

RELIGIOUS ADVISOR - Confers with Bishop Zumarraga on religious matters.

TWO GUARDS - Spanish guards stationed at the outside gates of Bishop Zumarraga's residence. They have contempt for Juan Diego.
